“Are u guys from India”? Heard someone calling us as we were walking out of the needle tower of stratosphere at Vegas. “So how much you won? I played with 10 cents at the slot machine yesterday and won around $1500, which is my one-month pay check!” She was a casino manager hailing from India.Yes! That’s what Vegas is all about!
I would describe Vegas as a pristine strip of architecture. Where else in the world can one find the “Big Apple “ with its enormous buildings and The Statue of Liberty, neighbored with the Eiffel tower, which lies next to the Venetian Canals and the gothic buildings facing the Italian Bellagio! Its truly a wonder.
Three whole days in the Vegas wasn’t enough to explore the casinos. Each one had its own unique features. Considering the architectural splendor and the fineries, I loved The Bellagio and The Venetian the most. Both had an inclination towards a Medieval Italian style of construction. The Venetian is a true replica of the St. Marks Campanile in Venice. The gondola rides in the canal, Madame Tussauds Museum, the paintings of Titian to Van Gogh and Picasso, the exhibits and the lancet arches gives us the exact feeling of the gothic buildings. The Bellagio is a work of inspiration from the Lake Como resort in Italy. The most attractive piece of Bellagio is the 2000 hand blown glass flowers that covers its 2000 sq. ft. lobby roof. The musical water fountain that stretches in front of the casino along the man made lake is yet another attraction of the strip.
We had booked our stay at the Aria resort, which was supposedly new and Binu wanted to give it a try. After freshening up we left for lunch and then continued walking along the strip and tried our luck at different casinos. As I wasn’t very confident about my ‘luck”, except for a Roulette I gave a hit only at the slot machines. It wasn’t bad I must say, played with 25cents and I made it to $13. Probably because it was a ‘13’, I lost it all on the third day . It was fun though.
The shows are another attraction of the Vegas. There are many groups like the blue man group, jersey boys, mystere etc. performing shows of different genre. These are theatrical performances based on certain themes with music, dance, comedy etc. We had been to the blue man show, which was a light and sound based show with intense humor. As we had a early morning flight to Las Vegas from San Francisco and a whole day walk along the strip, the show at 10pm was more like a shut-eye for all of us than to be attentive enough to understand the jokes.
Grand buffets seemed to be a significant aspect here. Most of the casino restaurants offer buffets. We gave a try at the MGM grand brunch buffet. As the planning for buffet was going on, I was a bit worried, as I couldn’t afford one more meal with just raw vegetables and bread. At least once I blamed myself for being a pure veg! But to my surprise, it was like a culinary tour of the world! From Italian Pizzas to Japanese sushi, Indian rice and curry, pastas and sizzlers, salads and breads. It was mind blowing!I was more than happy to see carrot rice and vegetable jalfrezi . I also filled myself with some potato tots and slices of melons and desserts. My knowledge is limited enough to explain the non veg menu, all that I could say is my husband and friends found it difficult to make space for dessert! It was truly a grand brunch for around $30 per head and almost a 100 and odd items to choose from.
After the filling brunch we went to the stratosphere, a casino located at the northern tip of the strip and the only one in the downtown Las Vegas. It is the tallest observation tower and one of the biggest towers in the United States with a height of 1149 ft. with 108 floors. From the 108th floor we observed the whole city and the super structures till then, appeared to be so tiny that they were hardly visible. Upon climbing a staircase we reached the top of the tower that had an open roof. There were adventurous rides on top of 1100 ft. like bungee jumping and other rides in the air. We could see a group of people in their sixties and seventies taking these thrill rides with their eyes closed with pure bliss on their face.
As a tourist, I feel it is difficult to observe a simple ordinary neighborhood lifestyle of the people in Las Vegas, as our focus will be on gambling, shopping, dining and luxury- for what people travel to Vegas. But I am curious to know the other side of Vegas. ‘n’ number of hotels, with ‘n’ number of rooms, ‘n’ number of visitors, a massive number of employees, where do they all go? How do they all live? What else in Las Vegas apart from casinos and gambling?
LV is also known as the sin city where illegal activities are tolerated. Marriages and divorces seemed to be the simplest of processes in Las Vegas. We could see many couples in their wedding attire in the city.Strip clubs, cabarets, liquor sales – are all legalized in LV. Prostitution, though not legal, happens like any other activity in the city. As we walk on the street people distribute prostitute contacts like how we receive leaflets of a store opening or a computer class in India, which was shocking to see.
And… It was time to return and we drove back to the airport for the flight to San Francisco. Upon the take off I looked through the window and that was breathtaking! I can relate it to a starry night sky or a collection of glittering diamonds, but I would say, that view of Las Vegas was more mesmerizing..
